Some people prefer to use judges instead of ministers as officiants for their wedding ceremonies. There are numerous reasons that a couple might decide to use a justice of the peace instead of a minister. For instance, some couples need officiants to conduct their wedding ceremony so that they are legally married but they do not want a religious ceremony. Same sex couples might also choose to use a judge or justice of the peace in states that allow same sex marriages and civil unions because many ministers refuse to conduct the ceremonies. Justices of the peace do more than just conduct wedding ceremonies, though. The justices are often judges who have received extensive legal training. Depending on the state that you live in, justices of the peace are either elected officials or they are appointed to the position by higher ups in state government. Justices of the peace need to be familiar with several legal issues that they might see in the community they serve. While they frequently conduct weddings, they also work with divorce settlement cases. Using a justice of the peace often means that you can avoid going to trial at a court. Instead, you and your representation can make your case directly to the justice without interference from several lawyers and juries. Justices frequently handle those who have broken minor rules, regulations, and laws such as those that regulate traffic speed. Using a justice of the peace often allows people to avoid court proceedings so that they can accept whatever fines they need to pay and move on.

While Justices of the Peace were originally commissioned to literally keep the peace, in today's society they are often used for either performing marriage ceremonies, or presiding over a court for smaller disputes. For example, a Justice of the Peace may dispense justice in a court that hears misdemeanor cases, traffic violations, and other petty criminal infractions. A Justice of the Peace may also preside over disputes involving landlords and tenants, small debts, or other types of cases that would be heard in small claims court proceedings. People who wish to be married by someone without religious affiliation often turn to a Justice of the Peace to perform the ceremony.
